Sale on my book of Martial translations
When my book of translations of 503 Martial epigrams from Latin was published in 2014, I was shocked that the price was set at $29.95, even though it was a paperback. It is now on sale for a limited time from the publisher for $20.97, a 30% discount. I realize that that is still rather steep, and that price is not for international orders. To get the sale price, you have to use the promo code NEWUWP at checkout.
The translations are close to the originals in meaning, and I have usually rhymed every other line, except in couplets, in which both lines rhyme. There are extensive notes in the back of the book explaining the joke (if it is not immediately obvious) and giving cultural information that the original audience would not have needed. There is also an index by subject. If you do not know Martial, he was a comic and satirical poet, and a number of his poems tackle taboo subjects such as sex and excretion in frank language. But his poems are also very revealing about what daily life was like in ancient Rome. Cool beans!
Just ordered. Yes, the promo code is needed. With tax and the thriftiest postage option, my total was $29.32 — cheaper than full price would have been without tax and postage. (Odd that when one clicks to read the University of Wisconsin Press's privacy policy, one ends up at the University of Chicago's. But whatever.) I remember a lot of these from when you were workshopping them on the Translation Board. Looking forward to getting re-acquainted. |
Hi Susan,
I am looking forward to receiving these. My order shipping to NC was priced similarly to Julie's. However, I did not pay attention whether shipping options were available and paid whatever the default shipping method was. Jim R. Ps I wonder whether you should retitle your thread with your name up front so that perusers know whose book they are clicking on. |
Thanks, Julie and Jim, for ordering the book. I hope you find it entertaining. Jim, I don't think I can change the thread title. I was hoping originally that the book would be priced so that casual readers would be encouraged to pick it up, but I think the press assumed that only libraries would be ordering it.
