And yes, you're right, Susan, though I'd argue that some pulp writers were pretty self-conscious about the psychological aspects of their fiction, seeing their work as manifestations of primal drives, essentially like the gods and myths of old (a god of love, a god of wealth, a god of nurturing destruction, and so on). They often saw themselves as creating a new mythology, like the comic book writers with their superfolks.
