David, in the US it's not that simple, since the very rich can now give unlimited funds to politicians to help them get elected, so the politicians who might otherwise change the law are beholden to the very people who don't want the law changed. To give an example, David Adelson has promised to spend over $100 million to elect politicians who just so happen to favor a tax law change that would save him $2 billion in the first year alone, and ultimately at least $8 billion in inheritance taxes when he dies.
But the point of the protest, I think, was to draw attention to the issue while making fun of the rich folks who spend their time in gatherings to discuss how to lower their tax bills.
