Ann (re #8), I considered "dance of death", but it seems to me that it is not a good choice in this particular case.

More thanks are due for further input (some for the second/third time) to E. Shaun, Bill (again), Susan (for reassurance on meter), and Douglas (I'd rather not post the whole poem, because I hope to enter it in a "can't find it online" contest), which is perhaps, probably being hubristic. And Roger, Brian, John W, Cathy, Bill. And Julie (& Ann) yes, Sur le Pont d'Avignon / L'on y danse, l'on y danse being one of the few French songs I can sing (when sufficiently primed), but I don't want to encourage a French pronunciation which, as was PMed to grateful me would require a "la" preceding it—Thanks M. This is a good place to thank all who have sent me PMs on the subject.

And thanks Skip for the American-French input.

I'm still not quite sure what is best—or maybe as several have suggested, the reader will figure it out.

But I certainly appreciate all the thoughtful input and witty comments.
