And it's good to remember that not only was Shevchenko born into serfdom, he also lived in a nation - Ukraine - that like Poland spent the Nineteenth Century absent from the map, being entirely occupied by Russia. It seems no coincidence that these lines -

Stand and water freedom with
Blood from tyrant veins -

directly echo the Marseillaise: "Qu'un sang impur / Abreuve nos sillons."
