Here’s another bit of background for you: Pushkin wrote the poem at his country estate in autumn 1833 and described his daily schedule in a letter to his wife: “I wake up at seven, have coffee and lie in until three. I’ve been on a writing streak of late and have already written a ton. At three I get in the saddle, at five take a bath and then have potatoes and buckwheat for dinner. Until nine I read. That’s my day, and they’re all alike.”
