As dire as the situation is, Max, it's worth noting that there have been some signs that things might be turning around. The 2018 election, without which we'd have a Republican controlled House and all hope would be gone, turned out to be a pretty strong rebuke of Trump. The Virginia state house just turned blue for the first time in decades. Kentucky, which voted for Trump by 30 points, just elected a Democrat for governor against a candidate who framed the election in terms of loyalty to Trump. The polls show several Democratic contenders would easily defeat Trump. Trump's popularity, while still strong in his own party, is nonetheless showing signs of erosion. More than half the country favors impeachment, and just about half already favor removal. And things seem to be getting worse and worse for Trump. Yesterday he was forced to admit defrauding his charity and was ordered to pay $2 million and banned from acting as a fiduciary for another charity. And next week the live impeachment hearings begin, which is virtually guaranteed to be horrible for Trump's popularity even if it doesn't lead to removal.

Yes, one never knows, and there's still reason to be fearful. It's not over till it's over. But still, let's not be blind to the positive developments.
