I've seen a few battlefields, in the New World and the Old, from Tippecanoe to say Hastings, and they tend in my experience to be big empty fields an army or two could move in. Nothing to see really, as the seeing goes. Not generally darkling though...
Livy was a big man for speeches before battles. Great stuff, and a venerable tradition, but I'd think most armies would have trouble hearing them.
