Jim, the first Tony Hoagland poem I ever read was -- could it really be around 20 years ago? -- called simply 'Lawrence'. I was writing a thesis on D. H. Lawrence at the time, and getting treated like a pariah for doing so. Then I found this poem, and it really did change everything for me. For this poem alone, Tony Hoagland has my eternal gratitude.
