Interesting opinions (off subject but, hey) on Odyssey and Aeneid translations. I've just read the TLS review of the Ferry and was underwhelmed by its chosen quotations.

My excitement in this field is to see the promised availability (April here in Scotland) of Peter Green's new Odyssey translation. I've waited ever since my grammar school-days, when I discovered his novels, for his versions and I hugely enjoyed his immensely clear, scholarly and largely rythmically effective (for me) Iliad when it came out three years ago. My one disappointment was the jarring invasion, from time to time, of infelicitous 'contemporary' language which sometimes deflated the vivid or turned the heroic mundane. Given his age, I had feared that 'his' Odyssey might escape us and the publication news, following so swiftly on from 'his' Iliad, is like a special blessing.
