Ann, to come slightly to the defence of Arnold, while it's true there is no "long withdrawing roar" in the Mediterranean, it's not the case that there is no appreciable tide. We certainly appreciate it here on days of acqua alta, and even on normal days there is usually at least a half-metre of difference, as you can see from the daily tide forecasts on
this site .
