I agree—Ruden's Aeneid is easily my favorite (I've read Fagles, Mandelbaum, Fitzgerald, Lombardo, Ruden, and Ferry), and precisely because of its compression.
My problem with the Ferry can be quickly summarized: "Fortune comes to the aid of the audacious." It's heartening to know my opinion is shared by someone with the Latin to justify it.
