CLARILAW

Oh to be at Clarilaw
Wi' aw oor skaiths gone syne,
An’ see the licht come lowpin’ owre
Your hills an’ mine.

Bogles black, nou left ahint,
We’d flinched frae time as bairns
Aw stickit far ’yont Rubers Law
An’ crooned wi cairns.

An’ God’ll lauch to see sic sichts
O’ crestin’ joys brak oot –
Tae ride atour thon Border braes
Cares cast like clout.

Tho ithers yit maun seek
The drublie derk’s auld flaw –
Fegs, God’s no blate gin he fleers up
The Lichts o’ Clarilaw

(With apologies to Hugh McDiarmid)

In memory of a euphoric once, 'nearly', time and place of perfection.
