James, I usually enjoy putting a pin to po-faced bubbles. On the other hand I can see it must be tough on editors. Finding shortcuts through the slushpile must be tempting – giving special notice to people whose work you know, or whose identities you sympathise with.
And how much does it matter who wrote the poem and for what reason? If it resonates with the editor and their readers, then so what if it was written as a cynical parody or by a computer? Several poetry magazines include the stipulation that submissions should not make use of AI. Why not? Should we also prohibit thesauruses, and rhyming dictionaries? And how would they know?
