Ah, good catch -- I wasn't even aware of this variation between Brit and US usage. Perhaps there are more cases I simply haven't noticed or remembered.

I wouldn't mind editors changing my spellings. I prefer British em-dashes so tend to be more irked by that, in fact. And I would certainly be irked by words being exchanged wholesale to fit US idiom.
