The novelist David Foster Wallace killed himself the other day. After the death of Tom Disch this seems another horrible blow. Wallace came to Colorado College and gave one of the most incandescent readings/discussions I have ever seen, and he came free of charge, out of the generosity of his heart. He was a remarkable person, and I think we will be a long time understanding the talent we have lost.

I am so sorry to hear about this. Oddly, I had just received an e-mail harrangue from my dad two days ago telling me how remiss I'd been in not reading any DFW.

Oh man, this is horrible! I only know him through his wonderful article on Roger Federer; Infinite Jest is on my shelf, waiting to be read. One always wonders how something like this could have happened, though the answer, when & if it is found, will never be satisfactory. But we still want to know, don't we.

Terrible news.

And a more common event than we might like to admit.

I was Googling about, and found the Wiki entry on the subject.

Nearly one million people worldwide die by suicide annually, making it one of the world's leading causes of death. There are an estimated 10 to 20 million non-fatal attempted suicides every year.
