The third. But I’m surprised this is even a problem; the meter prevents too many words in a line. When I get home, and if I can log in to this site, I will type out some George Starbuck limericks to show you; but he was purposefully breaking the line limit.

How many of your limericks have extra-long lines? Do you have lots like this, then?  
There was a young man from Japan,
Whose limericks just wouldn't scan.
When asked why this was,
He said, "It's because
I always try to get as many words in the last line as I possibly can."

This is the 21st century. There are thousands of ways of resizing anything and everything until it all fits together. You shouldn't accept typographic imperfections in your book.

No, Jayne. No limericks like that in the book. Just 3-4 (out of more than 150) which don't fit, mostly due to a lot of one-syllable words and silent letters. And long last lines aren't the real problem. It's (typographically) long second lines.

I've got a brilliant idea, Max! Just leave out those 3-4 that don't fit and stick with a book of 150+ limericks.

Just so you know that it's NOT only Allen and Walter who have opinions, I too vote for #3, in both its variants--if it's really, truly not possible to adjust page size or type size for the book.
