The Oldie Competition "A well-known book in 4 lines" by 25th July
This is a fun competition and is right up our street!
Good luck, all.

Competition no 179
Here’s the best of both worlds. Please give the contents of a well-known book (fiction or non-fiction) in four lines of verse. Do give the name of the book, or I might not guess.
Entries to ‘Competition No 179’ by post (The Oldie, 65 Newman Street, London W1T 3EG), fax (020 7436 8804) or email comps@theoldie.co.uk by 25th July 2014. Please don’t forget to include your postal address.

There was a Twitterature Competition about books. I entered it.; I even won something. I can't remember whether it was an Oldie Competition or a Speccie. Can anyone else?
I wrote this while walking in the woods, a clear benefit of exercise.
The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
Edward Gibbon with wit and urbanity,
Composed a magnificent tome,
To prove it was vile Christianity
Brought about the destruction of Rome.

Well, there was Spectator Competition 2747, but that was to reduce a poem to 4 lines. This one says "fiction or non-fiction". I wonder if The Oldie would accept summaries of book-length poems such as "The Faerie Queene"? ... I don't see why not.

No. There was another one about books.
I am sure The Faerie Queen would qualify. You and I must be the only people alive who have read it. All of it. I've read worse poems. The Cantos are much worse. And so is 'The Bridge'. And Ginsberg. Any Ginsberg.
Oldie Comp number 115. I did win. There are four little verses I can't use. Damn!

John, I've got bad news for you. You are the only person alive who has read all of it - I never finished the blasted thing. Mind you, I'm not sure I ever got to the end of "Paradise Lost" either.
But I agree; better a "knight pricking on the plaine" than a prick complaining in the night.

Nifty, Ann. Would I be right in supposing that
Proust loosed
past blast ?

Not quite as economical as Ann's piece ...
Grim and gory,
A fishy tale.
A whale of a story,
The story of a whale.

Holden Caulfield gets expelled
and can’t think what to do.
By girls and teachers he’s repelled
and ends up at the zoo.

Huck Finn's with Jim aboard a raft
That travels down the Mississippi.
Mark Twain recounts his tale with craft
Although the ending's less than zippy.
