Thanks, Martin.
We're discussing it, but aren't sure that either of these really says the same thing.
Thing is that a number of us believe that sentimental is not a bad word.
A great deal of what we all consider great poetry through the ages is sentimental.

Just to say again that I think it's hard to use the title "sentimental poetry" without Schiller's great essay on that topic coming to mind. There, it means something quite different. The essay in English:

Well, I should visit Eratosphere more often, as I see that the appearance of many Spherians at BTS has been celebrated prior to my belated brag.

Thank you, Vera.

And incidentally, I have the best credentials for sorting out sentiment (or is it sentimentality?) having spent forty-one years as a writer for Hallmark Cards. One possibility: every greeting card message--EVERY message--must end on an upbeat note--relentless optimism, hope, convincing sincerity--and as often as not, the word you. It's a craft and a skill that doesn't obviate poetic discernment.

I'm not sure what that category means at BTS.

It's a pleasure to publish you, Barbara, and all the other Spherians here.

The 'Sentimental' category, for us, has become a place for poetry that might evoke either a smile or a tear perhaps more directly (blatantly? bravely?) than is normally found in regular free verse or formal collections.

Congrats to everyone in BTS!

I have an 11-sonnet sequence in my new collection My Girl's Green Jacket with the title "Sentimentality." My title was inspired by Patrick Donnelley's essay at Poetry Daily, in which he says, "If a love poem is going to go off the rails, it’s usually in the direction of sentimentality. Some very good poems generate excitement from how much sentimentality they risk..." (as quoted in the Notes of my book.)
