Most of us here want the same thing: a Biden presidency that is responsive to the country's needs. We disagree about tactics and the degree to which we're willing to risk an extension of the Trump presidency.

John Oliver calls Biden the "getting shot in the leg instead of the heart candidate." If that were literal, it would make the choice of tactics easy; you don't take any unnecessary risk of being shot in the heart. Clearly some here view the choice in those terms. But it's clear that Oliver means Biden's the not-Trump-but-still-pretty-shitty candidate. As to how much risk to take as we push Biden to be less shitty, there's no right formula. The people I'll listen to don't all agree any more than we here do. But I'm inclined to listen to those less privileged than I am who are more likely to be the ones shot.

Can I just say, I don't watch John Oliver and thought I'd invented that joke.

Yes, I'm disappointed that Biden won as well. I was for Warren.

But Biden is better than just being shot in the leg. His healthcare plan would allow millions of people who now lack insurance to go to a doctor to have their shot legs be taken care of.

He is also the candidate who accepts the fact of climate change and wants to do something about it. He is the candidate who would put us back into the Paris accord.

He is also the candidate who as a senator pushed for and secured the passage of the Violence Agains Women Act.

He is the candidate who as vice president went on TV and movingly endorsed same-sex marriage.

He is the candidate who has the strongest support among African Americans at a time when healing our nation's racial wounds is high on the agenda of priorities.

I could add to the list, of course. Rather than using Oliver's analogy, I'd say we have a choice as people who are starving to death of the candidate who is offering us McDonalds versus the candidate who is letting us starve. Yes, I may be sad there's no candidate offering filet mignon, but McDonalds may save my life.

Anita Hill said last year that, although she was not satisfied with Biden's recent not-quite-apology to her for the way he managed the 1991 Senate hearing in which she testified about Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas' conduct, she would vote for Biden if he were the Democratic nominee.

I think, Aaron, you need to embrace two things at the same time-- how you feel and what can be done, now. I'm usually on your side ideologically, but you live, unfortunately, in country that's decidedly right-wing. I mean, christ, Trump actually got elected.

*Added: the absolutely shameless, obvious efforts to suppress the vote is worth a bloody conflict right now. The courts on this too- it's bad.

Liberal economic and environmental policies are far more popular in this country than conservative ones. Democratic candidates for the House, Senate and, in most elections (including four of the last five) President get more votes than Republican candidates.

You may find disheartening stats, like the unpopularity of "socialism," but many of those are due to ignorance and successful mainstream villainization. Social security, our most nearly socialist policy, is hugely popular.

It's unspeakably depressing that four of ten voters would choose Trump, but "decidedly right-wing" is a hard description to defend.

The title of the thread is "Voting." Just got back from casting my early ballot. (It was worth the trip to the registrar of voters. My wife was told her signature doesn't match the one they have on file.) That much feels good!
