Their motion turns irregular; she grays:
It’s nerve-wracking to break down crossing bridges,
Especially in wilderness! He prays
That he will cope… (Dusk’s creeping up the ridges;
Around them stretches mile on mile of frost…)
Braked, safe! No sudden swerve nor plummet, Splat;
Hot metal mash-up; graves; nor young love lost.
Their hearts pound… absorb grace… ‘God, what was that?’
They pause, then get out, check beneath the hood:
It’s clear to nose and eye something still burns;
There’s insulation browning. ‘Damn! Not good’ -
Too late, dark, hard to fix; each stomach churns.
Then - headlights and a horn bring warming cheer:
A tow-truck crests the rise and slows to stop.
They hug: (‘He’s mine!’); (‘Loved - though no engineer!’);
Their day, set for rock bottom, now seems top.
