Don't worry, Britain,--though Hadrian built his wall last Friday, the Empire will collapse this week, and you will be free to compose "Beowulf" in your native tongue.

No, Virgil, no:
Behind your verse so masterfully made
We hear the weeping of a Muse betrayed.
Your Anchises isn't convincing at all:
It's asking too much of us to be told
A shade so long-sighted, a father who knows
That Romulus will build a wall,
Augustus found an Age of Gold,
And is trying to teach a dutiful son
The love of what will be in the long run,
Would mention them both but not disclose
(Surely no prophet could afford to miss,
No man of destiny fail to enjoy
So clear a proof of Providence as this.)
The names predestined for the Catholic boy
Whom Arian Odovacer will depose.

John, that's right. And what about the Jutes? The Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes. I suspect that John Whitworth, if not autochthonous, is descended from Jutes.

Ann, thank you for posting that poem. Given my new role as Roman historian, I see it in a new light.

Best, best,

Aaron

Hmm. Well, there are yutes in My Cousin Vinny.
I've long had a soft spot for the Jutes. They get the short end of the stick!

Cheers,
John

Ann, to come slightly to the defence of Arnold, while it's true there is no "long withdrawing roar" in the Mediterranean, it's not the case that there is no appreciable tide. We certainly appreciate it here on days of acqua alta, and even on normal days there is usually at least a half-metre of difference, as you can see from the daily tide forecasts on this site .

Gregory - the book I looked it up in (for a different purpose) bears you out:

Aegean Sea: Tides minimal, with a range of only about 40cm/15 in.
English Channel (Dover): Tides between 5 and 7 metres.

Venice is, of course, special (in so many ways). Thank you for the tide-table. I shall file it in my collection of special headfood.

He may have not had a grasp of tides, but Arnold was spot on about the darkling plains and ignorant armies. How well I know the feeling.

Are Jutes Kentishmen or men of Kent? I can never remember.
