Does Adrian? He knew about the subscriber of the week. Is he a closet reader?
I'm cancelling my subscription. It's an excellent magazine, but my meagre wins have funded it. Can't afford it now.

I have amended the New Statesman's wikipedia entry to include a reference to this short-sighted action. Objective in tone, to comply with Wikipedia rules, but I hope it makes its point.
D.A. Prince is with us in urging letters of complaint.
I wish I had a subscription to cancel.

Um, perhaps this discussion should be moved to a less public forum, where it can't be used to confirm the NS bean-counters' apparent hypothesis that it doesn't make financial sense for them to keep the comps.

It doesn't really make financial sense to run the magazine at all unless it makes a profit which I very much doubt. It didn't, hence 'The Staggers' when the readership was three times what it is now.
The Oldie makes a profit I think. If you look at th make-up of that excellent monthly you wil probably see how they do it - lots of stuff from readers nd minimum staff. As for the Speccie I don't know.
I think I am right in saying that no left wing newspaper pays its way except the Daily Mirror.

Sylvia, I am a subscriber to NS and Speccie. I gave up the Oldie when Richard Ingrams went.

George, I think that the short list of distinguished NS competitors ought to include Martin Fagg. As noted in his obituary, "Those interested in literary competitions will remember him as a dominant and deserving winner from the Fifties to the Eighties."

When I have looked at comps of the past - 1980s and earlier - I am always struck by how expert the parodies were. People then seemed to know whole anthologies of verse by heart and perfected mimicry of style all the better because of it.

You're right. He shall be added.

Comp breaks

The NS (orig Week-end Review) has never had a break. One of its comps was cancelled because all the entries blew out of the bike-basket of the judge (war-time), and one was banned (sexist gags) in the 80s, but later printed in a Xmas edition, decades later.
The Spectator's current comp, however, is numbered from the first issue in 1950, and was cancelled in 1959 at no. 472, and revived, without warning really, in 1967, with the next number in sequence.
