Default Trains

Trains

Alone, on the porch, watching college students
run to the top of the hill, turn to the park,
spring sun sinking, the weather we waited for,
pure sky, amiable breezes pushing me to start
racing for the lonely train, the train I am,
speeding through stops, over trestles,
signal men diving, lantern lights swinging,
me concerned, but never enough, that hot rails will buckle
and the train will take a final flyer
off a mountain, which I prefer, or slam into a station,
cars flying over cars, the conductor crushed,
aware all along I am too obsolete to envy
the students running up the hill for beauty.
