Aaron, you might enjoy Thomas Mann's 65-page short story Death in Venice, Der Tod in Venedig, one of the world's great short stories and Mann at his peak. They made a good film of it with Dirk Bogarde playing Gustav von Aschenbach.
I've never seen anything quite like Venice. Maybe Istanbul is closest in mood, of where I've been anyway, and it's quite different. Not Amsterdam for instance. Gondolas are overpriced - the vaporetto is not - and boat trips to the islands or the Lido are an option. I like just to wander around the winding town.
My 2c. Congratulations once again.
Cheers,
an envious John :-)
Oh - if you're an early riser, consider wandering early. You'll see St Mark's Square empty of tourists.
