Holly, the problem with this is that his name was Byng, not Bing, and he wasn't executed for cowardice, but for not 'doing his utmost'.

Jerome. you're right about the spelling of his name but I think 'not doing his utmost' meant cowardice. It seems to have been very unfair.
What about Don Paterson's:

John, it was based on this from Wikipedia. Haven't the time at the moment to check in more depth. It seems George the Second could have saved him,but declined to do so. Suspicion of Admiralty face-saving.
The court martial sitting in judgment of Byng acquitted him of personal cowardice and disaffection, and convicted him only for not having done his utmost, since he failed to pursue the superior French fleet to protect his own.[3] The court martial had no discretion under the Articles of War and condemned Byng to death. However, its members recommended that the Lords of the Admiralty ask King George to exercise his prerogative of clemency.

Admiral Byng's reply to the captain of the ship that arrived from England to relieve him of his command and take him back to stand trial for a refusing to undertake a course of action for which Thomas Matthews had been famously courtmartialled twelve years earlier.
Bugger.

Sorry about the spelling of the poor man's name - I was was obviously thinking of Rudolf Bing who ran the Met Opera (or was it Bing Crosby?) Anyway the gag still works and I'm happy to remove any reference to the man's cowardice.
