Hi Jan!

Thanks for helping me remember how to count!

I've a solution to all your (and my) problems already:

Yeatsian seances! Then what to do with "Clairaudient"? Such a lovely word, but "Discarnate" might do. I still find those hyphenated-word wrap-arounds annoying, Founding Fathers or no. We're all entitled to a peccadillo now and again, no?

It's all one sentence: it has a subject and a verb. If you really want to be a stickler for grammar, I'll change the last comma to a dash. So there. I like the way the comma looks, I confess. If I added an "s" to "board," it wouldn't sound as good aloud. Thanks for all your attention to the detail and for reading, Jan.

Psychic Phenomena

Psychic phenomena,
Tarot and ouija board,
Yeatsian seances,
Discarnate raps

Metempsychosis or
Metagalactical,
Hit-or-miss cryptograph,
Death overlaps.

Founding Mothers are more flexible than Founding Fathers...maybe. I don't have a problem with Octuple Dactyls, so why should I have a problem with Triple Dactyls? You know the way it is: sometimes you just come to the end of the story before the time is up. If inspiration hits, you will know about it!

Thanks for enjoying.

Nice. Now if that really did solve ALL my problems!

Still doesn't solve the parallelism problem, though.

I do too, but occasionally . . . And I don't find those final "s"s a problem at all when reading aloud--certainly less a problem than what strikes me as inconsistent focus. (I'd add one to "cryptographs," too--my peccadillo?)

I'm almost obsessed with the form, having written a 50-stanza "biography" of a caricatured linguist in d-d's (without repeating a single d-d word, all of which are "legitimate"--no forced compounds or awkward coinages). I'll admit to having used nine of those hyphenated wrap-arounds, though.

Cheers,
Jan

See earlier post above:

"Might it not be better if the terms ["Metempsychosis," "Metagalactical"]were grammatically parallel rather than noun and adjective? "Metempsychotic"? (Perhaps a coined word, but it makes wonderful sense here . . . )"

That would make parallel (contrasting) adjectives for a series of nouns . . . seances, raps, etc. Otherwise, "metagalactical" is the sole adjective illogically coordinated with "metempsychosis," which makes mincemeat of the syntax. Isn't that a high price to pay just to have a six-syllable word?

And wouldn't "discarnate" take a stress on the second syllable? How about "bodiless"?

Oh well, nobody said it was easy.

Jan

Jan

"Metagalactical" modifies "cryptograph"!

"Discarnate": I don't have the pronunciation facts available, but I imagined the stress to be either on the first syllable or on both of the first two syllables; let me know if you discover otherwise. I prefer "discarnate" to "bodiless."

I honestly don't think of these as difficult, but kind of fun. They're word games.

If you're interested in comments on your epic DDs, just say the word and I'll take a closer look, though I don't know that I'll have anything profound to tell you.

Hi Terese
How about 'posthumous'?

Jan,
Found your Jack Sprat poem up there, cute and well-done. Just as a geeky technical note, you might consider just using the Jack Sprat verse as an epigraph and then rename your pair, as you've assigned them nutritional disorders that are different from those of Jack, who could eat no fat (probably a lipase deficiency), and his wife, who could eat no lean (protein metabolism problem).

regards,
Colleen

Great addition! Thanks, and I accept your gift graciously.
"Posthumous" has just the sounds I need there.
