I agree, John.
With a poet of Rilke's stature, I always think that if I hear it, he or she heard it -- unless what I'm hearing is my raving imagination, which I feel I must always ask myself. The ambiguities or layers of meaning or possibilities abound in R, yet he never dissolves into mush -- at least not in the poems that Susan has chosen. It's an awesome exercise of poetic control. And awesome selection by the translator.
