A Singularity
Oh, we're all singularities ... but this particular singularity is as big as our solar system and has just posed for a close-up. Well, a picture: it's three hundred million trillion miles away, whatever that means.
When I read and think about stuff like this it feels like someone's pouring bubbly on my brain.

The image we have of the Black Hole from Sci-Fi artwork and science textbooks is so familiar it seems amazing that this is the first actual photograph, that these things are no longer in any sense theoretical. Also amazing is that it looks exactly like…well, a Black Hole.
We truly are wonderfully, exhilaratingly meaningless, cosmically speaking. Yet in the face of this, we go on making meaning, which is both beautiful and heartbreaking in a way.

My heart gets beautifully broken in exactly that way, daily. You said it, man, and likely spoke for many.
Thanks a lot for posting the link to the image, Michael F.
Best regards all round,
Daniel

Reason: No need to display that I can be a different kind of hole. Everyone already knows.

Yes, but not even cosmically. On our own planet we are just one species of millions. We should all drop dead and be happy.
