Default Sor Juana Translations?

Hi folks,

I haven't been here in a while. The other day I started reading the Edith Grossman translation of Sor Juana and found it terribly flat and banal. Wondering if there are others people would recommend? Sadly, I don't have the Spanish to read the originals with the kind of ease I would want, though a dual language edition would be ideal. I know people here have done better than EG with individual poems--very happy for you to link your own or post in the thread, if that won't offend the Powers. Thanks!

C

I think it would offend the powers that be to post one's own translations, so I'll await the official go-ahead. Or you could maybe move the thread to Drills and Amusements, the only non-workshop space where posting one's own work is actually permitted.

Hey Chris,

Edith Grossman's translations of Spanish poems are pretty bad, IMO. In fact -- and I know this sounds snarky and arrogant, but it is true -- reading her collection of poems from the Spanish Golden Age is the main reason I started translating poems from the Spanish Golden Age, because I was sure it could be done better.

Anyway, that doesn't help with your query. I haven't dipped into Sor Juana yet myself, so I don't know which translations to recommend. (But I bet Bob's are good.)

Chris, I know that both Rhina Espaillat and Leslie Monsour have done some excellent translations of Sor Juana. Try doing an online search using their names.

I've emailed you some (I had a gmail address for you from a while back, but let me know if you don't have the account any longer).
