James, It would be a happy thing indeed to have this thread bubble back up from time to time to drop my jaw in awe of his poetry, which I am embarrassed and sad to say I hadn't read until Cally started this thread. Thanks for being the one to bring it back and thanks to that poem you linked I'm back on his cloud.

Jim, the first Tony Hoagland poem I ever read was -- could it really be around 20 years ago? -- called simply 'Lawrence'. I was writing a thesis on D. H. Lawrence at the time, and getting treated like a pariah for doing so. Then I found this poem, and it really did change everything for me. For this poem alone, Tony Hoagland has my eternal gratitude. The poem is at the end of this blog post:

Glad you liked that, Jim. I was visiting friends in Ann Arbor maybe 12 or so years ago and had some extra time and drifted into a bookstore. I went to the poetry section pretty intent on buying something (I still don't buy enough books). If I remember correctly I was hoping to find a particular book by Gjertrud Schnackenberg (a very unrealistic hope) and stumbled upon Donkey Gospel. I'd heard of him, but never read him. I just bought it without even reading a complete poem (just kind of thumbed through it). On the long flight home I got it out (anything to distract me from smoking) and just devoured it. It was really a moment. A very welcome surprise. (But I still wanted to smoke.) Here's one that I think I posted or at least mentioned a couple of years back.
