Ah, this long dormant thread is stirring again, though I see no one jumped at my invitation to turn other works of lit into d-d sequences. Can't resist, though, posting this d-d version of Browning's "Johannes Agricola in Meditation":

Glorious misery!
Heavenly Patriarch,
grateful am I that with
Thee will I dwell.
May I, a meek little
supralapsarian,
show no compassion for
those doomed to hell.

And, though a bit longer, this summary of "Midsummer Night's Dream":

Now the occasion of
Theseus' wedding to
lovely Hippolyta
signals our theme:
how lovers' whimsical
irrationalities
joyously dance in a
summer night's dream.

Come to the forest where
four young Athenians
(Hermia, Helena,
and their two beaux)
try to discover a
non-acrimonious
way to untangle their
various woes.

Fairy king Oberon,
grudging Titania her
love of a foundling, is
jealous and sore,
so he sends Puck for an
aphrodisiacal
flower to charm her and
even the score.

He wants moreover to
help the young lovers, but
Puck messes up and the
wrong guy is juiced.
Pity poor Helena!
What must she think as she's
involuntarily
doubly traduced?

Meanwhile a motley of
well-meaning citizens,
gathered to practice a
tragical skit,
prove to be players most
unsatisfactory--
much too much bumbling and
too little wit.

Mischievous Puck plays a
trick of his own, so that
willful Titania, a-
sleep in the grass,
wakes to a wonderful
implausibility--
falling for Bottom, trans-
formed to an ass.

This being comedy,
all is resolved. Let the
nuptials proceed, and may
each happy pair
(luckier far than that
tatterdemalion
Pyramus) never know
Thisbe's despair.

Cheers,
Jan

I hate posting right after Jan. Wonderful stuff!

Jan, I'm working on a short adaptation of the gollum scene from the hobbit, although it won't match yours.

...And now for something....completely different!

Wave-wavy Grave-gravy
Ben and bro Jerry
are trying to name their next
yum ice cream dish.

Jerry likes rock singers,
Ben prefers Salinger.
Maybe their next should be
Banana-Phish

Gollumly-Solemnly!
Gollum G. Gremlinly
sometimes tells riddles, and
guesses them too.
But Gollum's true favorites are
(over-indulgently)
things put on griddles and
things put in stew.

Stewingly-Trueingly!
Hungry G. Gremlinly
desperately wishes for
something to eat.
Goblins are nasty, an
impossibility.
Better are fishes, or
young hobbit meat.

Meetingly-Greetingly!
Lonely old Gollum G.,
naming and blaming and
hating old friends.
When Baggins arrives, he
(most inconceivably)
excels in gaming, and
guessing, he wins.

Bagginses-Has-in-His!
Poor Gollum's eyeballs are
bursting from sockets, his
ears flaming red.
If Gollum discovers
what Mister Baggins has
got-in-its-pocket-ses,
Bilbo is dead.

Not easy to get all of the elements--structural and grammatical--to mesh, is it?

One helpful device, sanctioned by the example of the "Founding Fathers," is to hyphenate words in order to preserve both meter and line:

... Speaking of Satan's re-
Bellion from God: ... [Anthony Hecht]

"... Fosters our growing de-
Linquency rate." [Hecht]

"... Beaten," he said, "by re-
Ligion and sax." [Hecht]

... Problems beneath his Im-
Perial drag. [John Hollander]

... Losing my sleep, and neg-
Lecting my wife. [Paul Pascal]

... Scoring apartheid, pro-
Duced a sage quote, . . . [E. William Seaman]

These examples (and others) all appear in JIGGERY-POKERY, the volume that unleashed this form on the world in 1967.

So I guess you could get away with:

Yeatsian trances, clair-
Audient raps.

(though I might drop the capitalization).

A different problem in:

Metempsychosis or
Metagalactical ...

Might it not be better if the terms were grammatically parallel rather than noun and adjective? "Metempsychotic"? (Perhaps a coined word, but it makes wonderful sense here with its suggestive overtones, and bizarre coinages are obviously not unknown in d-d's.) And why not "boards" while we're at it?

Cheers,
Jan

Aha! A new form? The mini-double-dactyl? Four lines instead of the traditional eight? Perfect for asthmatics.
