Default Oldie Comp

I don't want to weigh you down with an overplus of competitions over Easter, but this one looks a cinch and the closing date is sufficiently far away.

The Oldie Competition Number 111

A poem called 'Three Legs' please, written in three stanzas. Maximum eighteen lines. Entries to Competition No 110 by 8th May. Post to The Oldie 65 Newman Street London W1T 3EG or email comps@the oldie.co.uk.

Don't forget to include your postal address.

Do any of you (thisis another topic) remember a competition which involved Shakespeare's Dark Lady replying to him in sonnet form? As I remember, she was supposed to be pissed off with him, as she well might be. For our American readers pissed off UK = pissed USA. Pissed UK = drunk, as in 'pissed as a newt'.

John, is the title "Three legs please" or "Three legs"?

We're not used to manners in these parts.

'Three Legs' - please This is the language of The Oldie, edited by Richard Ingrams, first editor of Private Eye, not known for its nice manners, though, come to think of it, pint-sized Hislop is a sweetie. If you don't know the magazine, Janet, do try a free copy. I actually SUBSCRIBE (because it isn't available on-line).

John,
I was once a devotee of Private Eye and am aware of the virtues of those involved.

A brush with fame moment. I stood in a lift (elevator) with Peter Cook once. He was with his girl friend Suzy someone. I forget her name. I didn't stare because I was almost British but I wanted to kiss the hem of his garment.

If I subscribe to The Oldie it will always arrive too late for me to enter the contests.

Well now, Suzy Kendall was Dudley Moore's wife.

However, trawling my little collection of biographies, I can't find a Suzy (yet) linked to Peter Cook.
