John, scansion is just a device to describe what we're hearing, and I think in this case both scansions give an accurate description, and the effect of adopting one scansion or the other doesn't at all affect how one would say the lines or where one would place the stresses, so what does it really matter?

That’s fine by me, Roger, I’m mostly just riffing.
Cheers,
John

Roger's teasing, John. He knows very well that we have to argue about scansion on Eratosphere every so often. (I can't remember why. Because it's in the bylaws, perhaps. Or because it's good for the bowels. No matter--we have to do it, and so we do.)
Thanks for the enjoyable links, Jayne!

Glad you enjoyed reading and listening, Julie. I hope others did (and do) too.
Gyles' book Dancing by the Light of the Moon (see links in post #1) arrived today from Amazon, and it's a superb anthology. "Over 250 of our favourite poems to love and learn'', but it's so much more than that...

I don't really know anything about Gyles Brandreth, but my mother was friendly with his late mother. For several years, my mother gave as gifts sets of a word game Mrs. Brandreth had devised, bought from the inventor in bulk. Funny coincidence I thought you'd appreciate, Jayne...

Thanks for that nice little anecdote, Simon
Gyles is a very witty, very clever man... famous over here, and always on radio and TV, but he's lovely to be acquainted with; we only got to know each other over joking (at an Oldie lunch) about the way our names are spelt... or more often, mis-spelt!
