So, the point was to clarify by example the difference between its and it's. It wasn't some sideways comment on non-gender-specific pronouns. And it wasn't a joke about MIT itself, you just wanted to use word 'tautology' for some reason, though what the tautology was/is here, is, as you say, tough to figure out. So, finally, the reason I couldn't see what the joke was here was because there wasn't one: it was simply a piece of prose that used it and it's correctly.
I'm up to speed now.
