Default Encomium of Taylor Mac

An Encomium of Taylor Mac

I.
I praise one who, in sequined splendor,
as Scaramouche or Harlequin,
wages a war on the untender,
retrograde times we’re living in.
Yes, though an emperor worse than Nero
has scorched America with rage,
we here, the hopeful, have a hero
who pours acceptance out on stage.

Who sings to spite each crude attack?
It is the often nearly nudey
bearer of the pronoun “judy;”
I mean the regal Taylor Mac.

During the History of Pop,
as we are taught by countless songs
our fellow citizens won’t stop
committing xenophobic wrongs,
one, in a bodice, skirt or feather
boa, insists, hour after hour,
exclusion binds the freaks together,
gives them purpose, gives them power.

Who is this Dionysiac?
I mean the queen of counterculture,
the bawdy god, the ne plus ultra;
I mean the magic Taylor Mac.

II.
Since Judgment and his cronies
rule the ceremonies
in churches and stadiums,
and no one should be alone,
we need maracas and drums,
so we can begin a ritual
that is wholly our own,
a sacrament without shame,
a party, a habitual
game that is not a game
in which a uniform
battles a uniform,
a space in place of prayer.
We need to make it warm.
We need to revel there.

III.
An ambiguous body.
A haunting voice.
A very gaudy
sartorial choice.
The ardor of youth
in middle age.
I feel the truth
transpiring on stage
is the come-hither call
of a siren-song,
telling us all
we should belong.

Hi Aaron,

You've introduced me to Taylor Mac. This was fun, as per usual, and nicely done. If it's for an event, I think it will go over well.

Cheers,
John

You have entered the sodality
Of polyphanic modality
Where loquacious lingams
Chaunt in ginghams,
And mazy many watch
The arcana of the crotch.

A touching tribute with a beautiful message. My life has been so vastly removed from the reality of Taylor Mac that I appreciate and learned from your interpretation of his persona. I watched him perform on You-tube and saw him as courageous and vulnerable, a perspective which I might not have reached otherwise, if I ever happened to run across his performance at all. Thanks.

Ron
