A bang-up piece. Congrats, Katie!
I wonder if you spelled this word right: “resca.” I think it’s supposed to be “resaca” — a type of oxbow lake that can be found in the southern half of Cameron County, Texas. The resacas constitute former channels of the Rio Grande and are naturally cut off from the river, having no inlet or outlet.
I love all the birds and plants you mention, and especially the last 3 lines with that splendid metaphor.
