Brian, The Center for Book Arts in Manhattan has these and larger presses with big rollers. It’s not as silly seeming a place as its web presence sometimes suggests.

Hi Max, I prefer #3 as not requiring the eye to return left. However, the Collected Hardy, Complete Jarrell, Complete Whitman, and Oxford paperback Wordsworth all use #2.

Thanks for chiming in, Bill.

The book's been printed using #3, but it's interesting to get further opinions and data about what's been done.

One reason there's no ironclad standard, I think, is that in most cases it makes little difference. It's only when lines following the overrunning lines are indented or comparatively short (or, as in the case of the limerick book, both) that the choice matters much.
