Kudos, Mark! My immediate reaction is that your poetry would come across great read aloud. May this be the first of many times.
I've read several times to audiences in various settings, though I have to admit, I never really enjoyed it. I'd like that to change but so far it hasn't. I rationalize my public reading aversion by remembering things poets have said about hating to read aloud. Pound said it about readings in London in the nineteen-teens. Stevens hardly ever if ever did (correct me if I'm wrong on this, somebody). But I do think it's a lovely thing to do, if the poet is into it and some people are kicking back to listen. Which it sounds like you and they were.
