When my book of translations of 503 Martial epigrams from Latin was published in 2014, I was shocked that the price was set at $29.95, even though it was a paperback. It is now on sale for a limited time from the publisher for $20.97, a 30% discount. I realize that that is still rather steep, and that price is not for international orders. To get the sale price, you have to use the promo code NEWUWP at checkout.
The translations are close to the originals in meaning, and I have usually rhymed every other line, except in couplets, in which both lines rhyme. There are extensive notes in the back of the book explaining the joke (if it is not immediately obvious) and giving cultural information that the original audience would not have needed. There is also an index by subject. If you do not know Martial, he was a comic and satirical poet, and a number of his poems tackle taboo subjects such as sex and excretion in frank language. But his poems are also very revealing about what daily life was like in ancient Rome. If you are interested in ordering the book, the link to it is below.
