Andrew, thank you. Aquash was a truly grisly case. But statistics on this, everywhere, will make you cry.

I think the silence around the misogyny that alllowed AIM's leadership (including Leonard) to be implicated in her rape/murder remains pretty much intact in most Left circles. Shame. If some CIA spook-boss had put a gun in her mouth, we would make it a talking point.

NO doubt! But never fear. That is changing, and this is becoming a huge issue, both for urban Indians, and those on the Rez, I think. Alexie himself has spoken about it, choking as that sounds.
It's weird, because I've been writing about this lately, from a poetic standpoint.
IthacaLit is making me the upcoming Featured Poet. I am not sure exactly which poems will appear on the site, but some of that writing might make it into my feature. I hope so.

P.S. Andrew, for example, this new article from Indian Country, and the explosions from so many of the mainstream news services. They say NPR gets the exclusive, but that even The New York Times is in talks with the woman behind the story.
Joy Harjo addressed this, right away. Which, to me, says much.

Watch closely which men do their best to ignore or bury this, face down, for all their "woman" talk. In so doing, you will take a step further, on the Red Road

Aquash & Co.
Andrew, if you're still around, I came across this, which the Colorado Autonomous chapter of American Indian Movement has posted online, and I thought of you and this artifact thread on Anna Mae.
It's the tribunal condemnation of two Natives whom activist Russell Means accused of ordering Aquash's killing, when, according to him, they mistakenly ID'd her as a CI working for the feds.
