Ha! Just catching this. Gail, what a great and sad poem. It's true there's a lot of Eeyore in Hardy, though his poetry is bright enough to make it still worth reading. His novels are beautifully written, but reading one can be like watching a puppy get run over by an 18-wheeler, and then hearing the truck slide into reverse.

Yes, Andrew. I don't want anyone to think I'm dissing Hardy! I have huge respect for him, and I especially love the novels.

I just know this one poem, sent by a friend. The same friend got me Hirschfield's Bashō. A beautiful volume, with a great critical apparatus, which fortunately/unfortunately makes clear just how much is lost in the translation.

But that above is a great English poem, whatever exactly the original was like. If you do get the whole collection let me know how it is.
