Default Alistair Elliot

I'm posting this here because it will reach more people who might care. Alistair Elliot is dead. Fine poet and inspirational translator of (among others) Euripides, Heine, Valéry and Verlaine.

He has gathered and translated French love Poems, Italian Landscape poems and Roman poems about food.

Alistair has been ill for some time and his last volume of poetry "Telling the Stones" was recently published by Shoestring Press. I have it beside me.

I was trundling around the web looking for traces of Alistair and came across this. A piece of history. He was a worthy winner in this competition (in which I got a mere mention) but it was a surprise to find it after all this time.

Coming rather late to this. I greatly enjoyed a poem he wrote about a tour he did in Italy entitled On the Appian Way. I must re-read it - and one day do the tour myself... It's a very witty evocation of Italy in the 1980s and takes me back to my early days in the country.
