I am glad to hear that he cares about communicating with at least some of those who have supported the conference in the past. Thanks for sharing that, Gail.

More bad news about West Chester
So ... what happens to that $2 Million if (when?) the Conference fails??
Does the University get it?
Or could the Poetry Center move somewhere else - a different college or university, say - and take the endowment ?
I too wish Jesse Waters well, of course.
He's clearly trying to do what's best to keep the Conference on course.
But ... sure looks like an uphill battle.

A good portion of the NEH matching grant is in the endowment. The NEH grant was to establish the Poetry Center at WCU. Also, a good number of the donors are local. Thus, the university and/or the foundation are obligated to keep the conference going. If the conference fails, the financial question will doubtless have to be settled by lawyers, which I assume will involve the DoJ as this was a federal grant.

So, I was... deselected as the judge of the Justice Prize due to, at best, administrative incompetence on their part. (They knew, or should have known, the job was mine from several avenues of communication that are very much in public at this point.) Attempts to rectify the situation with Jesse Waters have revealed a dismissive, condescending side to him.

Can't say I'd heard of him before today, but he's the kind of guy who would judge any old contest for any old book, judging by his CV.

Sebastian Matthews is the son of the poet William Matthews. I have read the son's memoir of his father--an unpleasant affair.

I just saw on FB that Sebastian Matthews won't be judging the Justice. Jericho Brown will.

Yes. "Unforeseen circumstances," apparently.
