Hmm. Well, the Angles got England, the Saxons got Saxony, and the Jutes got Jutland. Since that's to the East, I guess they'd be... men of Jutland?

Cheers,
John

Update: "Now, the traditional definition is that anyone born east of the river Medway is a Man of Kent and anyone born west of the river Medway is a Kentish Man."

Ah, Rob, I take your point about Arnold's darkling plains. They are a constant in the subject of conquest, stretching forward to Auden's Shield of Achilles and rolling back to Tacitus's account (a beautiful fabrication) of the speech of Calgacus before the last battle; one that he, like Achilles, was about to lose.

I've seen a few battlefields, in the New World and the Old, from Tippecanoe to say Hastings, and they tend in my experience to be big empty fields an army or two could move in. Nothing to see really, as the seeing goes. Not generally darkling though...
Livy was a big man for speeches before battles. Great stuff, and a venerable tradition, but I'd think most armies would have trouble hearing them.

Cheers,
John

Yes, I've checked it out on Google. The Men (or Maids) of Kent are those born east of the Medway, and are traditionally believed to be descended from Jutes, while Kentish Men are Saxons.
