Post Extreme Sonnet Anthology now available

Got sonnets?

You’re invited to submit a batch of your best sonnets for the upcoming sonnet anthology I’ll be editing. Submission guidelines and deadline can be found at RhizomePress.com (near the bottom).

I’m looking for sonnets that are true to form, with rhymes that are actual rhymes (not eye or slant rhymes), reasonably strict iambic (or perhaps trochaic) pentameter, and tight language. I prefer vivid imagery, smart metaphor, interesting musicality, and lines beginning with upper case (though the latter isn't required). Each poem should be titled and stand on its own—no sequence poems, please. (Though if you title each sonnet, how would we know? You're welcome to mention in your bio that they're part of a sequence.)

I do hope you’ll submit! And stay tuned for guidelines for the next anthology of formal poetry planned for next year.

Cheers, and stay well!
-- Beth Houston

Post Extreme Sonnets

The anthology Extreme Sonnets is now out and available here, with blurbs from Tim Steele, Rhina Espaillat and Dana Gioia, and with a Foreword by Rhina. Beth Houston has done an outstanding job as editor in gathering and presenting so many sonnets, both traditional and contemporary. The contributors include our own Alex Pepple and a number of other Sphereans, though I won’t attempt to name everyone here for fear of leaving someone out. Rhina’s Foreword and Beth’s Preface alone make Extreme Sonnets worth reading, but the sonnets make their own statement about the continued survival and relevance of form and meter today.

Initially I was surprised by the lack of response.
But in fact there are lots of former Erato members, but not so many current ones.
So I'm not surprised.

I make it 23 current Sphereans, including new members, in the list of 41 contributors, that is to say David Anthony, Lisa Barnett, Bruce Bennett, Jerome Betts, John Brugaletta, Jared Carter, Ted Charnley, Nicole Caruso Garcia, Claudia Gary, Mel Goldberg, Midge Goldberg, Max Gutmann, Beth Houston, Jean L. Kreiling, Duncan Gillies MacLaurin, Leslie Monsour, Chris O’ Carroll, Alexander Pepple, Susan de Sola, Wendy Sloan, Carol Taylor and Gail White.

Perhaps the lack of response was because it might have been better to post news of the publication of the anthology on Accomplished Members?

I've moved this thread from General Announcements, following Jerome's suggestion.

I've just ordered a copy (having forgotten to submit anything myself).

Congratulations to everyone! I can't wait to receive the anthology.

Jayne
