Funnily enough, Star Trek is responsible for probably the most famous example of the sort of supposedly-bad-but-perfectly-understandable grammatical construction so beloved of language pedants: the split infinitive of "To boldly go where no man has gone before". I think 19th century linguistic prescriptivists decided they didn't like split infinitives because they thought English grammar should conform more to classical/Latinate rules, or something. But I'm willing to modestly accept that I could be wrong (see what I did there?)

Kevin — "Half of the people can be part right all of the time
And some of the people can be all right part of the time
But all of the people can’t be all right all of the time"

I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

(though it could have been Donovan)

No, it was Albert Einstein. I saw it on his Facebook page.

I have known the biblical phrase since childhood. The story of the woman taken in adultery is my favourite example of the teachings of Jesus before they became embuggered by the tedious mansplaining of the tentmaker from Tarsus.

Thus I, being more familiar with the King James bible than the later manifestations, have always known the phrase as "he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" which is grammatically uncontroversial as well as being a good rule of thumb for conflict resolution.

Copy that, Ann. Yet ... the past is another country. They do things differently there.
