I`m having trouble letting this go, which I can only attribute to the talents of both poet and translator.

Might there be, just a chance now, that with `pardon` would come `recompense for our punishment(s)`?

And with that would come not 'treasure' but 'reward'?

Just thinking outloud. And perhaps I just like to poke the reader a bit.

I like your subtle reading, Kevin. What you say makes perfect sense to me, and Rebora himself probably had that sort of thing in mind, at least unconsciously.

But he says "treasure," not "reward," and "ristoro" isn't "recompense," it's "solace" or even a "rest" that "restores" or comforts.

This is why I prefer the implicit wording, which is how Rebora does it, leaving it to the reader's imagination.

My coming to 'recompense' from 'ristoro' is something of a long road. I borrowed it---or stole it---from a line from Longfellow's translation of Dante's 'Paradiso.' (I know, I know. I still find Longfellow useful in his way.)

Perhaps the meaning---recompense for ristoro---is what we would call archaic.
