Default Hamlet on the radio

Recent General Talk conversations have mentioned Dr. Seuss, Shakespeare, and racially diverse casting. I thought this event that's relevant to all three might interest some here:

The Old Globe Production Of 'Hamlet: On the Radio'
https://www.kpbs.org/events/2021/apr/23/hamlet-radio/

It's being performed by San Diego's Old Globe Theater, not London's.

Because Dr. Seuss lived here, our Old Globe is supported by The Theodor and Audrey Geisel Fund.

From the San Diego Union-Tribune:

Quote:
“Hamlet: On the Radio” — Late April: In its second collaboration with KPBS following the hugely successful radio adaptation of “Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” last fall, the Globe will revive its 2017 production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” in audio form. Edelstein directed the original production and will reunite his mostly non-White cast, including star Grantham Coleman for a radio version that will be trimmed from its previous three-hour running time. Edelstein’s “Hamlet” was the first and only Globe production to break $1 million at the box office.

Thanks Julie. I've only seen Hamlet live once and that was with a predominantly black cast. At the RSC in Stratford, which is only a couple of hours away. It was incredible. I was so proud of the twins. They were only ten and sat though the whole nearly four hours enraptured and barely squirmed once. Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet was stunning (he played him as an art student, hence the paint splatters).

My only in-person Hamlet starred Steven Lange, who was great. He found a way to portray him that made me feel I understood Hamlet better than I had before, despite having read the play more times than I could count. The other standout performance was Ophelia, who was played by Elizabeth McGovern. She was fabulous. Those who only know her from Downton Abbey have no idea.

Thanks for that, Mark! I also enjoyed the videos that followed the first one (at least as my personal YouTube algorithms are configured), with the cast commenting on their production:

Yes, they're great. Plus, videos like that are a lifesaver for the permanently harassed high school English teacher.

Just to lower the brow on this conversation for a moment, my favorite "to be or not to be" monologue is this one.

Mark, I saw "The Tempest" in Stratford in 1979. With Mary Devorak! Nirvana.

Rick, who is Mary Devorak? I can't find anything about her online.

My nirvana Tempest experience was Shakespeare in the Park in NYC. It was a beautiful summer evening and we lucked into first row seats, dead center. Patrick Stewart was Prospero and he often stood ten feet in front of me looking me directly in the eyes as he soliloquized. The whole production was perfect in every respect.
