Excellent review, Mike! I especially like the phrase “nuanced sentimentality” which I agree has a place in poetry, certainly. Why does it get a pass in music lyrics, where there’s often no nuance, but verboten in poetry? The avoidance of sentiment can make way for a whole new kind of cliché, which one runs into in certain incomprehensible pieces. But...
More importantly, this is a must-have book and a balanced and insightful look into it.

Siham

Great review, Mike--it made me glad I'd pre-ordered Nick's book (originally, along with Van Morrison's The Prophet Speaks--a fun pairing!--but Van got here first). The week after Christmas is when I'll get to enjoy this fine debut. Congratulations, Nick!

Michael,
Finally caught up with this review. Busy season and pretty well recovered from surgery~~but now that I read it I know I have to have a copy of Nick's new book! And that's what most reviews are for. Thanks for that, and the verses you chose to quote are, as always, most impressive.
Best,
Terese
